‘Last year, 1.2 million people visited’ Daegu Seomun and Chilseong night markets, reopening in March

[Daegu=Newsis] Reporter Jeong Chang-oh = Daegu City and Daegu Traditional Market Promotion Foundation (hereinafter referred to as the Foundation) announced on the 2nd that they will close the Seomun Night Market and Chilseong Night Market, which are representative tourist attractions in the region, for two months from January to February and then reopen with a new look starting in March.

Like last year, Seomun and Chilseong Night Market will be temporarily closed for two months in January and February this year to provide citizens and tourists with a better environment and more abundant and diverse things to see, enjoy, and eat.

Seomun and Chilseong Night Market, which has been visited by 1.2 million people since its reopening in April last year, was selected as one of the ‘100 Best Night Markets in Korea’ by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization in 2023.

In particular, Seomun Market has established itself as a representative nighttime attraction not only in the region but also nationwide, as it was selected as one of the ‘Top 10 Traditional Korean Markets (K-Markets)’ by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which promotes the development of key tourist attractions in the region.

Seomun Night Market, which opened eight years ago, has become a hot tourist destination that many young people and tourists visit on weekends, and Chilseong Night Market is receiving great response as a family visit attraction utilizing the Sincheon waterfront space such as the Jinggeomdari Bridge.

Seomun Night Market operated three days a week (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) until the end of December, but Chilseong Night Market operated five days a week except Tuesday and Wednesday until the end of October, taking into account the surrounding environment and last year’s operating performance.

It is also expanding the participatory events that highlight the characteristics of each night market, such as performances by local musicians every week, Seomun Song Festival, and Chilseong Night Market Festival, and providing new things to see to citizens by creating night market photo zones and landscapes, drawing attention as a representative tourist attraction in Daegu.

In order to make a comeback for the Seomun and Chilseong Night Markets, we plan to recruit stall operators who will soon be able to spread their dreams and passion. We also plan to recruit foreign stall operators and provide unique menus.

Park Ki-hwan, the director of the Daegu City Economic Bureau, said, “We plan to renovate the Seomun and Chilseong Night Markets during the two-month closure period to continue their reputation as the hottest night market in Korea.”
