Dongseong-ro, a tourism special zone, and Suseong-gu, a cultural special zone, will face major changes starting this year. Daegu City plans to join forces with local governments to create regional landmarks.
This year, the city will begin the Dongseong-ro Renaissance Project urban space restructuring project, including creating a busking mecca in the main space of Dongseong-ro, creating a representative cultural street plaza between the old Daegu Department Store and CGV Hanil, building a light art platform for the old Daegu Department Store, designating a specific area for outdoor advertisements, creating a street of emotional open-air cafes, and revitalizing the alleys connecting Dongseong-ro. The plan is to start design and construction in 2025 and complete the project in 2026. A budget of 9.5 billion won is expected to be invested in the project.
The busking mecca Dongseong-ro project, which was selected as a local characteristic preservation project by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, will renew the old central police station and the front plaza into a unique space centered on performance culture, and the Tongsin Alley intersection and the old Daewoo Building south plaza into a youth plaza where busking and encounters can be enjoyed. In addition, a media façade using the wall of the old Daegu Department Store building, which has been vacant for a long time, as a canvas will be implemented to provide something to see.
In order to restore the old reputation of Dongseong-ro, the representative downtown area of Daegu, the city is promoting the Dongseong-ro Renaissance Project, which links four areas: tourism activation, youth culture expansion, commercial district activation, and downtown space restructuring, together with Jung-gu. To this end, Dongseong-ro was designated as Daegu’s first tourism special zone in July of last year. The project to be carried out from this year to next year is the core of the space reorganization project.

Suseong-gu, which was designated as a cultural special zone by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism at the end of last year, is also preparing for full-scale change starting this year. The Cultural Special Zone is a project to select and support local governments that will lead regional cultural balanced development, and the government has selected 13 local governments nationwide as targets for the Cultural Special Zone.
The city and Suseong-gu are promoting a project to turn the entire city into an art museum. They plan to invest 19.8 billion won from the national, city, and district funds over three years starting in 2025.
A Suseong-gu official said on the 6th, “We plan to develop media art content that combines regional cultural resources such as the Daegu Gansong Art Museum with cutting-edge technology and create dedicated facilities to foster Suseong-gu as a media art landmark.”
